If you are asking how to run Windows Server within a container, then you need to look at the Docker docs. It is my understanding that it can only be done if you are running Docker For Windows as the host OS above the containers.

This would require a VM under linux that is running Windows server as the guest OS. Here is a blog article to get you started. https://blog.docker.com/2016/09/build-your-first-docker-windows-server-container/

Remember that in addition to rudimentary Docker support that Microsoft has its own container engine.

Last but not least, the CRI-O container interface also is worth looking into, because while Docker is a defacto standard now, Kubernetes Container Runtime Interface has many vendors (Red Hat, Microsoft and others) persuing their own container engines. If your work is for production then you may want to consider the recent activities of the Open Container Initiative (OCI).

I personally, and this is simply my opinion, not an official statement for Linux Academy, do not think Docker's prominence will be long-term, especially for Windows workloads. This is because of Docker's beginnings with cgroups and the fact that sharing kernel namespaces is different on a windows server platform.

    Hope this helps, - John

Shoot me a message on Linkedin.com if you like, I would like to follow your progress. I am working on a Cloud Migrations course now and will be doing a lesson on migrating Windows workloads later this year.
